All about the ancient tribes
The Maya civilisation originated in the region that is now known as the southeastern portion of Mexico, the entirety of Guatemala and Belize, as well as the western parts of Honduras and El Salvador.
Of all the ancient civilizations that once thrived in Mesoamerica, the Maya are undoubtedly the most well-known. Around 2600 B.C., they made their first appearance in the Yucatán region of what is now southern Mexico, Guatemala, northern Belize, and western Honduras. They grew to prominence around the year 250 A.D. in these areas.
Around the year 250 A.D., the Maya started building their civilisation throughout a territory that was roughly the size of Texas and was located in what is now Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Belize, and parts of southern Mexico. This region is known as the Maya lowlands.
Around 1800 B.C. marks the beginning of the Preclassic Period, also known as the Formative Period. This is when the earliest Maya villages were established. Agriculture was used by the early Maya, who cultivated maize (corn), beans, squash, and cassava, among other foods (manioc).
