Others, like Black Hawk’s major competitor, Keokuk, came to the conclusion that because the Sauk and Fox tribes could not reasonably fight the United States via force, elimination was essential, if not desirable, in their opinion.
It is estimated that 450 to 600 members of the British Band perished during the fight, which is around half of the 1,100 individuals that crossed the Illinois River with Black Hawk in 1832, according to various sources.
The ensuing turmoil culminated in the Black Hawk War (1832; see Black Hawk War), as a result of which the Sauk were compelled to cede further land to the United States. It was in the late nineteenth century that they relocated to Iowa, then Kansas, and eventually settled in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma).
