All about the ancient tribes
The ancient towns were completely lost until the 19th century, when their remains began to be found by explorers and archeologists. Until that time, the ancient cities had been virtually forgotten. The Maya still call their ancestral territories of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador home even in the modern day.
In all, there are about 4,400 Maya sites spread out over Latin America, the majority of which may be found in Mexico. Exploring all of Mexico’s ancient sites may easily consume a whole lifetime of someone’s time.
Some of the most magnificent Mayan ruins are located on the Yucatan Peninsula, which is home to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. Although there are hundreds of Mayan ruins scattered around Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and Guatemala, the Yucatan Peninsula is home to some of the most impressive.
The Maya are currently estimated to have a population of around six million people, making them the biggest single group of indigenous peoples found north of Peru. Mexico is home to many of the most populous Maya communities, the most notable of which being the Yucatecs (with an estimated population of 300,000), the Tzotzil (120,000), and the Tzeltal (80,000).
Comparing star charts to satellite photographs was the method that led William Gadoury of Saint-Jean-de-Matha, Quebec, to make the discovery. The young archaeologist who made the discovery in the Mexican forest gave the city he found the moniker ″Mouth of Fire.″ It is believed to be the fourth largest Mayan city and was found in the jungle.
Archaeologists are almost unanimous in their belief that the demise of the Mayan civilisation was brought on by a combination of factors, including prolonged drought, warfare, unsustainable agricultural techniques, and overpopulation.

The Maya were a Mesoamerican culture that emerged approximately 1500 BC. The majority of the Mayan pyramids were constructed by the Maya between the third and ninth centuries AD. These people make their living mostly by farming and sometimes by selling handicrafts.
