When kings died, they followed the path linked to the cosmic movement of the sun and fell into the Underworld; but, because they possessed supernatural powers, they were reborn into the Sky World and became gods.

And other European diseases, such as measles and mumps , also took substantial tolls – altogether reducing some indigenous populations in the new world by 90 percent or more.
The Aztec Empire flourished between c. 1345 and 1521 CE and, at its greatest extent, covered most of northern Mesoamerica.
