Playa Del Carmen is in the Rivera Maya . It is sorta in the center of it and is south of Cancun. Riviera Maya is an area that runs roughly from Cancun to the north of the Yucatan Penninsula through Tulum (a city known for it’s Mayan Ruins as well as vacation resorts) and Punta Allen, to the south.
Staying in Playa del Carmen is generally safe , and lots of people do go there with no worries at all. However, it is important to note that it’s not always 100% safe . Though crime against tourists is rare, it’s good to know how to minimise the risk so you can have a stress-free, absolutely amazing vacation.

Is Riviera Maya Safe Right Now? In 2020, Riviera Maya has seen a rise in crime making some areas an unsafe destination to visit . If traveling to a tourist destination, staying in a resort and being cautious of where you’re traveling to then there’s no reason that this is a destination in Mexico to avoid.
If you go to Cancun for vacation you will mainly stay at a large all inclusive resort. You will spend most of your vacation there. In Playa Del Carmen you have more options for staying. Playa opens more opportunity for exploration and doing more things than just staying at a resort.
Well, it is a tough decision. However, I prefer the more quiet and relaxed environment of the Riviera Maya than I do Cancun . Cancun can be hectic, more people, more traffic, & more of a “city” feel. But at the same time, it has all the conveniences of a city, such as, restaurants, bars, & shopping.
Due to Cancun’s limited access – one entrance, one exit – along with heavy security throughout, Cancun is incredibly safe . Currently the federal police and Navy personnel patrol the beaches, the police and Army monitor the highways and surveillance cameras have been installed at the ferry piers.

Tulum is more the destination of choice for those looking for an off-the-beaten-path, back-to-nature adventure where everything is much more rustic, small-scale, and low-key than in Playa del Carmen . Playa del Carmen is the better choice for those looking for a little more action and modern accommodation than in Tulum .
Safety in Cancun and Playa del Carmen While you need to exercise caution no matter where you travel, both of these touristy towns fall on the safer side. There is no current travel warning for either area.
You can jump in the water at Tulum ruins and swim north to Boca Paila. Even if you are just going to visit the ruins it is still quite an experience to swim out on the ruins beach and see the ruins from the water. On a hot summer day it is a great way to cool off.

3. Re: Is Riviera Maya a safe destination? No where is perfectly safe but the Mayan Riviera is one of the safest areas of Mexico. Traffic is getting worse (and thus more accidents) and both Cancun and Playa del Carmen have recently had some incidents of gang/cartel violence.
It is more expensive than most other Mexican cities. Playa Del Carmen is more expensive then most other places in Mexico because rents are high on 5th Avenue and prices have to be passed on. Many things are imported to Playa and this adds to the cost as well.
