In the literature of the Aggadah, we find three distinct explanations for Elijah’s background: (1) he was a member of the tribe of Gad; (2) he was a Benjamite from Jerusalem and was the same Elijah who is referenced in 1 Chronicles 8:27; and (3) he was a priest.
Before David’s death at the age of 70, he makes the decision that Solomon, a son born to him and Bathsheba, will succeed him as king of Israel rather than Adonijah, his eldest surviving son. David’s reign as king of Israel lasts until David’s death.
