Like many Maya buildings, Maya temples were built of stone, with platforms on the top where wooden and thatch structures could be built . Temples tended to be pyramids, with steep stone steps leading to the top, where important ceremonies and sacrifices took place.
They used tools such as fire and basalt axes on wood. Fire was very unpredictable so they switched to basalt axes for a little more precision. On stone they used tools made of flint, obsidian, granite, limestone, and quartzite(Stierlin 132).
The Maya pyramids are structures built in the jungles of Central America by the Maya civilization between 200 and 900 AD .
The ancient Mayans built two types of pyramids , those that were meant to be climbed and those that were not. The first type was used for holding sacrificial rituals. The other type was not meant to be touched and was sacred. The pyramids were built so high that their tops could be seen protruding out of the jungle.
Scholars have suggested a number of potential reasons for the downfall of Maya civilization in the southern lowlands, including overpopulation, environmental degradation, warfare, shifting trade routes and extended drought. It’s likely that a complex combination of factors was behind the collapse.
The Pyramid of Djoser
Two thousand years ago, the ancient Maya developed one of the most advanced civilizations in the Americas. They developed a written language of hieroglyphs and invented the mathematical concept of zero. With their expertise in astronomy and mathematics, the Maya developed a complex and accurate calendar system.
The Mayan religion was Polytheist , and they worshiped more than 165 Gods. The Gods were human-like. The Gods were born, grew up and died.
Pyramids were used not only as temples and focal points for Maya religious practices where offerings were made to the gods but also as gigantic tombs for deceased rulers, their partners, sacrificial victims, and precious goods.
Further excavations revealed that it had nine platforms, a single stairway, and a temple containing human remains, a jade-studded jaguar throne, and a so-called Chac Mool. The Chac Mool is a type of Maya sculpture of an abstract male figure reclining and holding a bowl used as a receptacle for sacrifices.
For the Mayan Housing the most common form of housing was walls made of stone or mud. These huts were covered with hay providing protection from things such as rain and snow. These homes usually had one or two sets of stairs usually long and wide.
Maya royalty recorded their history in writing and in imagery carved on monuments. Burial in the home was common among the Maya , but only a few family members were entombed there, Lucero said. No Maya cemeteries or other burial sites have been found to account for the rest of the dead.
