Our cruise went to Costa Maya for about 8 hours. The port is friendly and easy to get around. This port is really great ! for those undecided about an excursion you can do it all here! Shopping, swimming, restaurants and bars. Very clean and friendly.
It’s possible to climb most of the buildings. For the moment, other than bathrooms, there aren’t other services available at Kohunlich .

Our travel agent told us that you can climb and walk on the Tulum Ruins . As opposed to Chichen Itza, you no longer can walk and climb on it during the tour. Go to Coba about 45 minutes driving time to the west of Tulum .
To answer your question though – yes, the ruins are safe . Chichen Itza is a bit of a trek (3 hours drive each way) and being inland in the jungle, it can be extremely hot there. Tulum is much closer and the setting is spectacular (the ruins are on top of a cliff).
The pyramids and temples are common at most of the ancient Mayan sites around Yucatan and Quintana Roo but to prevent injury and damage to them many are roped off and you can’t climb. There are though 3 that you can climb. Coba , Uxmal and one in Izamal.
