Today the Spokane Tribe of Indians primary government operations are located in Wellpinit Washington with a citizen population of approximately 2,900 enrolled members.
Where are the Spokane Indians located?
The Spokan or Spokane people are a Native American Plateau tribe who inhabit the eastern portion of present-day Washington state and parts of northern Idaho in the United States of America. The current Spokane Indian Reservation is located in northeastern Washington state, centered at Wellpinit (Sčecuwe).
The Spokane Tribe of Indians are of the Interior Salish Group, which has inhabited northeast Washington, northern Idaho and western Montana for many centuries. The city of Spokane, Washington takes its name, which means “children of the stars or the Star People”, from them.
Hayes. As established, the Reservation contained 159,000 acres. As in the past, natural resources are protected by the Spokane Indians. The Spokane Indian Reservation consists of 108,874 acres of forest, 8,552 acres of agricultural land, and 10,328 acres of lakes.
The lower Spokane clan’s name was s-kes-tsi-phl-ni, meaning “ place where fish were plentiful,” in reference to their rich fishing grounds near Little Falls on the lower Spokane River.
Hayes formally declared the Spokane Indian Reservation the new and smaller home of the tribe. The three bands of the Spokane Indians were split up and some found new homes, which are now known as the Coeur d’Alene Indian Reservation, the Flathead Indian Reservation, and the Colville Indian Reservation.
Spokane Area History Spokane’s first residents were Native American. From the Spokanes, we get our name, which means “ Children of the Sun.” Spokane became an incorporated City on Nov. 29, 1881, encompassing 1.56 square miles. Back then, the City was known as Spokan Falls and had 350 residents.
Today, the 2,879 enrolled Spokane tribal members live both on and off the Spokane Indian Reservation. The reservation was created in 1881 by U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes through Executive Order. 6
The food of the Spokane tribe included salmon and trout and a variety of meats from the animals and birds they hunted. They supplemented their protein diet with roots, seeds, nuts and fruits.
The Indian reservation system was created to keep Native Americans off of lands that European Americans wished to settle. The reservation system allowed indigenous people to govern themselves and to maintain some of their cultural and social traditions.
That can mean proximity to pollution, unfair policies or limited access to natural resources. The Spokane Tribe’s experience with the legacy of uranium mining on their Eastern Washington reservation is an illustration of environmental racism.
It is known as the birthplace of Father’s Day, and locally by the nickname of “Lilac City”. Officially, Spokane goes by the nickname of Hooptown USA, due to Spokane annually hosting Spokane Hoopfest, the world’s largest basketball tournament.
The Spokane were influenced by the coastal tribes and many built villages of plankhouses. Others built pithouses as their winter shelter. Their summer shelters suited their nomadic style and they lived in tule-mat lodges that were fast to erect and easy to dismantle.
In 1951, the Spokane Tribe officially became one of 574 recognized tribal governments within the United States following the passage of their formal Constitution that governs them today.
