In early 2021, Deb Haaland was sworn in as the secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior, making her the first Native American cabinet secretary in the history of the United States. A tribal member of the Laguna Pueblo, she was raised in New Mexico, a state that has been home to 35 generations of her family.
The Pueblo people have lived on the land that is now the state of New Mexico since the 1200s and Haaland identifies herself as a 35th-generation New Mexican. Her mother, Mary Toya, a Native American woman, served in the United States Navy.

“Last night Debra and I were married at Hyatt Regency Tamaya in Santa Ana Pueblo. It was truly a magical evening. Shortly after the ceremony, the clouds opened up to a rainstorm and a big, bright rainbow appeared,” Sayre wrote on Facebook following the ceremony.
Most of Haaland’s goals during his professional club career have come from his left foot. He has scored 117 goals so far out of which more than 50 per cent of them have come from his preferred foot. Haaland started the new season with 11 goals and four assists in just eight games across all competitions.
