All about the ancient tribes
The mohawk hairstyle is named after the Native American tribe. The name Mohawk comes from a name their enemies called them, meaning “ man – eaters.” The term man – eaters does not really mean that they ate people. It means that they were fierce warriors. The Mohawk’s name for themselves means “people of the flint.”
Members of the Mohawk tribe now live in settlements in northern New York State and southeastern Canada.
A dugout canoe, made from hollowed-out logs, was long and could carry many people. Here is a website with pictures of different Mohawk canoe types. Over land, the Mohawks used dogs as pack animals. (There were no horses in North America until colonists brought them over from Europe.)
Scholars know that they ruthlessly tortured war prisoners and that they were cannibals; in the Algonquin tongue the word Mohawk actually means “flesh-eater.” There is even a story that the Indians in neighboring Iroquois territory would flee their homes upon sight of just a small band of Mohawks.
Today, the Shakopee Mdewakanton are believed to be the richest tribe in American history as measured by individual personal wealth: Each adult, according to court records and confirmed by one tribal member, receives a monthly payment of around $84,000, or $1.08 million a year.
While the mohawk hairstyle takes its name from the people of the Mohawk nation, an indigenous people of North America who originally inhabited the Mohawk Valley in upstate New York, the association comes from Hollywood and more specifically from the popular 1939 movie Drums Along the Mohawk starring Henry Fonda.
Today, there are about 30,000 Mohawk in the United States and Canada.
As with many American tribes, the Mohicans ‘ traditional ways of life were disrupted by European settlers, and the tribe was forced to move from its homeland, assigned to a distant reservation. Today, there are about 1,500 Mohicans, with roughly half of them living on a reservation in northeastern Wisconsin.
The Mohawk are traditionally the keepers of the Eastern Door of the Iroquois Confederacy, also known as the Six Nations Confederacy or the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Our original homeland is the north eastern region of New York State extending into southern Canada and Vermont.

Enemies of the Mohawk tribe included the Algonquin, Huron, Pennacook, Lenape, Ojibway (aka Chippewa) and the Mohican tribes together with all the other people they conquered.
Between about 1604 and 1614, the Mohawk and Conestoga waged war, with the Mohawk nearly made extinct. The arrival of Europeans negatively impacted the Mohawk people.
According to a recent study published in The American Economic Review, they were then the tallest people in the world. Men stood an average 172.6 centimeters (about 5 feet, 8 inches) tall, a hair or two above Australian men (averaging 172 cm ), American men of European decent ( 171 cm ) and European men ( 170 cm or less).
TIL: Native American Mohawks were often used as labourers on the skyscrapers because it was believed they had no natural fear of heights. In fact, they were afraid, but unlike their American workers, their spirit guides, which were actually extraterrestrials, provided them with anti- fear serum.
Most people believe ( due to Hollywood movies) that the Mohawk hairstyle started from an indigenous American Indian tribe called Mohawk. This is not true to fact. The Mohawk tribe originated from The Mohawk Valley in upstate New York.
