They did not live in teepees, but had permanent villages with substantial houses. At the time of their removal, the Cherokee had a higher literacy rate than the non-Indian Americans.
Click here for more details on three main types of homes: the Teepee, Longhouse, and Pueblo. Wigwams were homes built by the Algonquian tribes of American Indians living in the Northeast. They were built from trees and bark similar to the longhouse, but were much smaller and easier to construct.
For shelter, Apache used tipis, ramadas, and wickiups. Tipis had hide covers. Ramadas were open- air shelters constructed of poles set in the ground and connected by cross poles covered by brush.
Teepees were the homes of the nomadic tribes of the Great Plains. A teepee was built using a number of long poles as the frame. The poles were tied together at the top and spread out at the bottom to make an upside down cone shape. Then the outside was wrapped with a large covering made of buffalo hide.

These were very tall cone- shaped dwellings made out of thatched (woven) prairie grass covering a frame of wooden sticks. Wattle-and-daub houses were made of woven sticks, bark, vines, and other plant material (wattle) covered with clay or some other plaster (daub).
Wigwams are made of wooden frames which are covered with woven mats and sheets of birchbark. The frame can be shaped like a dome, like a cone, or like a rectangle with an arched roof. Once the birchbark is in place, ropes or strips of wood are wrapped around the wigwam to hold the bark in place.
Higher platforms were built to store possessions. While the wigwam was usually a home for just one family, the longhouse was home to many families. All families in the longhouse were related to one another and belonged to the same clan.
Quahadis were the hardest, fiercest, least yielding component of a tribe that had long had the reputation as the most violent and warlike on the continent; if they ran low on water, they were known to drink the contents of a dead horse’s stomach, something even the toughest Texas Ranger would not do.
