Archaeology in the Southern Piedmont Between A.D. And the most obvious archaeological site relating to the Pee Dee culture is the Town Creek site, located on the Little River in Montgomery County. The southern North Carolina Piedmont is also unique in the history of North Carolina archaeology.

The Little Pee Dee is a sluggish meandering blackwater river that ranges between 10 to 25 feet (3 to 8 m) wide and 6 to 10 feet (2 to 3 m) deep in its upper reaches. It is navigable only by canoe or other small craft. Some parts of the Little Pee Dee River are nearly blocked by low-hanging tree branches.
The Chicora were traditionally a coastal tribe living near Pawleys Island, South Carolina. They grew corn, tobacco and beans in their gardens and domesticated animals like deer and chickens.
This means that descendants of the original tribe organize themselves, either socially or politically, as a group. The Catawba, Pee Dee, Chicora, Edisto, Santee, Yamassee, and Chicora -Waccamaw tribes are all still present in South Carolina as are many descendants of the Cherokee.
