The Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana is the only Louisiana tribe to still live on a section of their original homeland, with a reservation located near the town of Charenton, approximately two hours from New Orleans.
The Chitimacha were particularly noted for the skill of their basket weaving, employing a “double-weave” technique resulting in different designs on two surfaces. They subsisted on corn (maize), beans, and squash; wild fruits and berries; deer and bear; and many varieties of fish.
The Chitimacha Tribe’s language is unique and is an isolate, unrelated to any other language. Our language has been highly documented by many ethnographers dating back to the late 1800s. The majority of the work on our language comes from two Tribal members as sources, Chief Benjamin Paul and Mrs.

Choctaw men wore breechcloths. Choctaw women wore wraparound skirts made of deerskin or woven fiber. Shirts were not necessary in Choctaw culture, but men and women both wore poncho -style capes in cool weather. Like most Native Americans, the Choctaws also wore moccasins on their feet.
