All about the ancient tribes
The movie simplified it from the comics, so there are five tribes – border, merchant, mining, river and the Jabari – and their major deities are Hanuman, for the Jabari, and Bast, for everyone else. There is no ” panther tribe,” just the royal family, of which the Black Panther is a member.
As in the comics, the four tribes (The River tribe, the Mining tribe, the Merchant tribe, and the Border tribe ) worship Bast, the panther god, amongst others, and also have a strong spiritual tradition of ancestor worship.
Having been swiftly defeated by Black Panther, W’Kabi called for the Border Tribe’s war rhinoceroses. It is implied a portion of the Border Tribe has been imprisoned or defected because when T’Challa asked whether the Border Tribe would participate in the Battle of Wakanda, Okoye said “those that are left”.

After T’Challa is stripped of his powers for both of his fights for the throne, the only way he is able to have them restored is by eating another heart – shaped herb and being buried so that he may enter the ancestral plane and reconnect with the past Black Panthers.
Shuri was created by writer Reginald Hudlin and artist John Romita, Jr., first appearing in Black Panther Vol. 4 #2. In the comics, she is T’Challa’s half – sister – the movie could make them full siblings. Shuri is the only daughter of King T’Chaka and his third wife, Ramonda.
Gearing up to fight, they all chant collectively the word “yibambe”. The word can either translate to “hold off” or “hold fast”, deriving from either “yibambe icimile” or “yibambe amandala”.
Having lost his faith in both T’Chaka and T’Challa due to their failures to capture Ulysses Klaue, the man who was responsible for the death of his parents, W’Kabi put his faith in Erik Killmonger, supporting him in taking the throne of Wakanda and seemingly killing T’Challa as a result.
