A plaque on the Wren Building, the college’s first structure, ascribes the institution’s origin to “the college proposed at Henrico.” It was named for the reigning joint monarchs of Great Britain, King William III and Queen Mary II.

William & Mary’s traditional rival in football is the University of Richmond. William & Mary and Richmond have met 120 times since 1898, making the rivalry (sometimes referred to as “the South’s oldest rivalry”) the fourth most-played in Division I college football.
On Sept. 3, 2020, William & Mary announced the decision to discontinue seven of its 23 NCAA Division I varsity sports — Men’s and Women’s Gymnastics, Men’s and Women’s Swimming, Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field, and Women’s Volleyball — effective with the end of the 2020-21 academic year.

As for which is better, that’s really a personal choice—it really comes down to your personality and where you will feel most at home. William and Mary has a fairly small campus, and has a more intimate feel. UVa’s graduate schools are better known and generally ranked higher than William & Mary’s.
It is not as difficult to get into as a private Ivy League school, but it isn’t easy either. In 2018, the acceptance rate at William & Mary was 37%.
