Government. The headquarters of the Shawnee Tribe is Miami, Oklahoma. Currently, there are about 10,000 enrolled tribal members, with 1,070 of them living within the state of Oklahoma.
Tecumseh’s death at the Battle of Thames in 1813 marked the end of any united American Indian front. The Treaty of Ft. Meigs (1817) effectively ceded all Shawnee lands to the federal government, and placed the Shawnee on three reservations in present-day Ohio: Hog Creek, Lewistown, and near Wapakaneta (Wapaughkoneta).
In the west, the Shawnee continued the fight and in time the Iroquois power weakened and the Shawnee Indians moved back into Ohio from the south and the east. They settled in the lower Scioto River valley. At the end of the French and Indian War when Britain defeated the French and took over the Ohio lands.
Their homes were originally wigwams and birch bark houses, and their clothing varied depending on the climate where they lived. The Shawnee Tribe was very good at adapting to survive in their surroundings. In 1861 Kansas decided that Native tribes should be removed and the Shawnee joined the Cherokee tribe in Oklahoma.
Religion – The Shawnee. Like many indian tribes, the Shawnee worshipped the Great Spirit. The Great Spirit had two deities under it. The one referred to as “Grandmother” was in charge of indian affairs.
Shawnee, an Algonquian -speaking North American Indian people who lived in the central Ohio River valley. Closely related in language and culture to the Fox, Kickapoo, and Sauk, the Shawnee were also influenced by a long association with the Seneca and Delaware.
The Shawnees were farming people. Shawnee women planted and harvested corn and squash. Shawnee men hunted in the forest for deer, turkeys, and small game and went fishing in the rivers and lakes. Shawnee Indian food included soup, cornbread, and stews.

Cherokee, North American Indians of Iroquoian lineage who constituted one of the largest politically integrated tribes at the time of European colonization of the Americas. Their name is derived from a Creek word meaning “people of different speech”; many prefer to be known as Keetoowah or Tsalagi.

The Shawnee tribe originated in the Tennessee region around the Cumberland River but they migrated to many other parts of America. The Shawnee Home Tribal Territories were Tennessee, South Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
Today, most members of the three federally recognized tribes of the Shawnee nation reside in Oklahoma.

The Shawnee made their clothing, and most of it was made from animal skins or fur. Shawnee women wore skirts with leggings to keep warm and the men mostly wore leggings. Shirts were not usually worn in the Shawnee culture. Both men and women wore ponchos in the cooler weather.
