The Shawnee were traditionally farming people and hunters and fishermen. The tools used by the Shawnee included spears, tomahawks, and bows and arrows. Shawnee arts and crafts included wood carving, pottery, and beadwork, which they are well- known for.
About the Shawnee Tribe The Shawnee Tribe is a federally recognized sovereign nation with about 3,200 tribal citizens as of 2020. Shawnee citizens reside not only in Oklahoma, but also live and work throughout the world.
They were active in the Northwest Indian War of the 1790s until they and other tribes were defeated at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794. The Shawnee were then forced to surrender most of their lands in Ohio with the signing of the Treaty of Greenville in 1795.

Being absent from their Kansas reservation, they became collectively known as the ” Absentee Shawnee.” An 1854 treaty failed to lure them to Kansas with the promise of allotments. Before the Civil War erupted, Kansas Shawnee with Southern sympathies joined the Absentee on the Canadian.
They lived in small round dwellings called wikkums, or wigwams. Each Shawnee village also included a larger council house built from wood. Today, the Shawnee only build a wigwam for fun or to connect with their heritage, not for shelter. Now most Shawnees live in modern houses and apartment buildings.
