The Iroquois lived in longhouses and wigwams. Longhouses are very big and spacious, and more than one family could live in them. They were fifteen to twenty feet high, twenty feet wide, and fifty to one hundred feet long. Also they save energy by only having one fire going for two families.
Longhouses were also used as places of storage. Dried meats and corn, as well as other food and personal belongings, were stored on platforms built high up on the walls of the longhouse. Firewood was stacked in areas near the entrances at either end of the structure. Covered pits dug inside the house also stored food.
Sometimes referred to as the Iroquois Confederacy or Six Nations, the Haudenosaunee originally consisted of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca nations. Just as most Americans today no longer live in log cabins or sod houses, neither do Onondaga people live in their traditional elm longhouses.
They actually called themselves Haudenosaunee, which meant “people who live in the extended longhouses.” The Iroquois lived in a type of dwelling known as a longhouse. A longhouse is a long, narrow single room that was built by Native American Indians, but also by those inhabiting Asia and Europe.
Modern wooden houses are held together with steel nails, but the Iroquois had no nails. Instead, they tied or lashed their buildings together with long strips of bark, or with ropes made by braiding strips of bark.
Another name for the Iroquois was Haudenosaunee which meant “People of the Longhouses “. Longhouses were permanent homes built from wood and bark. They get their name because they were built in the shape of a long rectangle. Usually they were around 80 feet long and 18 feet wide.

The Neolithic long house type was introduced with the first farmers of central and western Europe around 5000 BCE, 7,000 years ago. These were farming settlements built in groups of about six to twelve and were home to large extended families and kin.
Food That The Iroquois Ate Iroquois people would mainly eat food that they grew and hunted. They mainly ate squash, corn, and beans. These three were called “The Three Sisters”: the physical and spiritual sustainers of life. They would also prepare and eat tacos and tortillas.
