All about the ancient tribes
The Wichita were successful hunters and farmers and skilled traders and negotiators. Their historical homelands stretched from San Antonio, Texas in the south to as far north as Great Bend, Kansas. A semi-sedentary people, they occupied northern Texas in the early 18th century.
The Wichitas were farming people. Wichita women worked together to raise crops of corn, beans, squash and pumpkins. Men hunted deer and small game and took part in seasonal buffalo hunts. The Wichitas also collected fruits and nuts to eat.
The Wichita wore clothes made of tanned hides. The men wore shirts and loin cloths and leggings. Both men and women wore moccasins. The women wore dresses that reached from their chin to their ankles.

By 1772 they were located near what is now Wichita Falls, Texas. During the American Civil War they returned to Kansas, and in 1867 they were removed to the Wichita Indian Reservation in Oklahoma, designated for the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes (Waco, Keechi [Kichai], and Tawakonie [Tawakoni]).
The Wichita band of Indians was one of several bands that composed the Wichita confederacy. The Wichita called themselves Kitikiti’sh, meaning “raccoon eyes,” because the designs of tattoos around the men’s eyes resembled the eyes of the raccoon.
In the 21st century, the Comanche Nation has 17,000 members, around 7,000 of whom reside in tribal jurisdictional areas around Lawton, Fort Sill, and the surrounding areas of southwestern Oklahoma.

Wichita oral tradition tells us that the Wichita and the Pawnee are related. People from what is now Arkansas and Louisiana migrated to the Platte River in what is now Nebraska.
