The Waccamaw people are an indigenous people of the Southeastern Woodlands, who lived in villages along the Waccamaw River and Pee Dee River in North and South Carolina in the 18th century.

Waccamaw Siouan Indians are one of eight state-recognized Native American tribal nations in North Carolina; they are also known as the “People of the Fallen Star”. Historically Siouan -speaking, they are located predominantly in the southeastern North Carolina counties of Bladen and Columbus.
Originally they were formed by five tribes: the Cayuga, Onondaga, Mohawk, Seneca, and Oneida. Later, in the 1700s, the Tuscarora tribe joined. The French named them the Iroquois, but they called themselves the Haudenosaunee which means People of the Longhouse. The British called them the Five Nations.
Part of the Winyah Bay watershed, the 140-mile Waccamaw River is one of the most beautiful blackwater rivers in the country. Tannins from decaying leaves give the river its ebony color. It flows through cypress swamps, historic rice fields and tidal marshes that are home to many rare species of plants and animals.

It is the largest natural Lake between Maine and Florida. Lake Waccamaw has a dam that serves to keep the Lake from shrinking in dry weather. The Waccamaw dam was built in 1926 by the state. Lake Waccamaw has four feeders, called First Little, Second Little and Third Little Creeks and then Big Creek.

Besides deer, the Native Americans frequently ate rabbits, Prairie dog, Beaver, Lamb, Buffalo, Mutton, and Pork.
