All about the ancient tribes
The Edisto River is one of the longest free-flowing blackwater rivers in North America, flowing over 250 meandering miles from its sources in Saluda and Edgefield counties, to its Atlantic Ocean mouth at Edisto Beach, South Carolina. Its name comes from the Edisto subtribe of the Cusabo Indians.
Unlike a handful of privately owned islands in the area, Kiawah is open to the public despite being largely managed by resort properties. Edisto Island proper is sparsely populated, covered with the ruins of former plantations and colonial-era buildings.
The Catawba, Pee Dee, Chicora, Edisto, Santee, Yamassee, and Chicora-Waccamaw tribes are all still present in South Carolina as are many descendants of the Cherokee.
Edisto Beach State Park is open with restrictions. Botany Bay Beach is open. There is a section of the beach that is closed for nesting shorebirds that is clearly marked by signs. We look forward to your visit to Edisto and hope to see you soon!
The gorgeous beach is not all Edisto has to offer. If you’re ready to see more than sea and sand, you can book a boat tour to explore the creeks and marshes winding through the landscape. The beaches here are also pet-friendly.
Alligators. Alligators love the swamps and marshland of the lowcountry. They also love the black waters of the Edisto River. That said, alligators are a part of the lowcountry and are seen regularly by those who enjoy outdoor activities and watersports, but they rarely cause a problem.
Do you feel safe walking alone at night in Edisto Beach? Extremely safe. Night or day, it’s a very safe place.
Edisto Beach has no lifeguards, so all swimmers do so at their own risk. You should also remember to stay away from the groins (the rock piles that line the beach ) as the current could swimmers to get too close to these rocks, which could result in injury.
Absolutely no glass containers. That means no beer bottles, too.
All major ABO blood alleles are found in most populations worldwide, whereas the majority of Native Americans are nearly exclusively in the O group. O allele molecular characterization could aid in elucidating the possible causes of group O predominance in Native American populations.
The Cherokee Indians are a Native American tribe. They are largest tribe in the United States. The name Cherokee comes from a Muskogean word that means “speakers of another language”. The Cherokee called themselves the Ani-Yunwiya, meaning “principal people”.
The Catawba Indian Nation is the only federally recognized tribe in South Carolina, with modern day tribal lands located in York County.
The Town of Edisto Beach has 37 public beach accesses located at each intersection on Palmetto Boulevard providing access to the Atlantic Ocean. Some provide off-street parking and dune walkovers. No overnight parking is allowed at the beach accesses.
Edisto Island is one of South Carolina’s Sea Islands, the larger part of which lies in Charleston County, with its southern tip in Colleton County. The town of Edisto Beach is in Colleton County, while the Charleston County part of the island is unincorporated.
The sea creatures that you may encounter can include dolphins, sea otters, alligators and a variety of fish to delight any angler. The beach itself is gently developed with low-level beach houses situated along 4.5 miles of uncrowded, pristine beach, beside the many tidal creeks and rivers and throughout the interior.
