Approximately 100 Ayoreo people, some of whom are in the Totobiegosode tribe, live uncontacted in the forest. They are the last uncontacted peoples south of the Amazon basin, and are in Amotocodie. Threats to them include rampant illegal deforestation.
While the world is more connected than ever, there are still isolated pockets of people around the world. It’s hard to know how many ” uncontacted ” tribes exist today, but the advocacy group Survival International estimates that there are more than 100 around the world.
Divided into around 400 tribes, Indians of the Amazon rainforest live in settled villages by the rivers, or as nomads deep inside the forest. Most of the Amazon tribes that live by the rivers are in contact with the rest of the world.
The Sentinelese. The Sentinelese are an uncontacted tribe living on North Sentinal Island, one of the Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean. They vigorously reject all contact with outsiders. Survival International lobbies, protests and uses public pressure to ensure their wish to remain uncontacted is respected.

North Sentinel Island is one of the Andaman Islands, an archipelago in the Bay of Bengal which also includes South Sentinel Island. It is home to the Sentinelese, an indigenous people in voluntary isolation who have defended, often by force, their protected isolation from the outside world.
The Sentinelese do not practice cannibalism There’s no evidence to support this, and a 2006 analysis from the Indian government following the death of two fishermen on the island concluded that the group does not practice cannibalism.
There are guided tours on the Amazon to see things like the Amazon River Dolphin, some of which apparently will let people swim with them. Based on this, it’s probably safe to swim in those areas, but like any river with wild-life there are no guarantees. If you are worried about wildlife, not very dangerous.
Native American tribes are not subject to state or federal income taxes. Tribes can and do set their own sales taxes for products purchased from them on their lands. Individual Native Americans who receive per capita gaming distributions from their tribe must pay federal tax on this income.
The most widely spoken language in the Amazon is Portuguese followed closely by Spanish.
