All about the ancient tribes
The Chinooks lived in coastal villages of rectangular cedar-plank houses. Usually these houses were large (up to 70 feet long) and each one housed an entire extended family. Chinook people live in modern houses and apartment buildings, just like you.
The Chinook Indians, relatives to the Clatsop tribe, lived in the Northwest along the banks of the Columbia River and the coast of the Pacific Ocean. The Chinooks were superb canoe builders and navigators, masterful traders, skillful fishermen and planters.
Chinook History Their main food source was salmon, but Chinook men also caught other fish and sea animals. The Chinook woman gathered clams, mussels, shellfish, berries, and roots. The Chinook men hunted elk, deer, buffalo, and sea animals.
The Chickasaw are the richest and most politically connected of the Five, whose numbers include the Cherokee, Choctaw, Seminole, and Muscogee Creek. All came to Oklahoma in the early 19th Century after being forcibly removed from the Southeast to make room for white expansion.
The Chinook Indian Nation, consisting of the five westernmost Tribes of Chinookan peoples, Lower Chinook, Clatsop, Willapa, Wahkiakum and Kathlamet is currently (2020) working to obtain federal recognition.
The Chinook used shells as a form of currency.
The Chinook is named after the Chinook Indians who lived along the Columbia River, and who were the first people to tell stories of “The Great South Wind”, or, in their language, the “Snow Eater”.
The Chinook Indian Nation, a confederation of the Lower Chinook, Clatsop, Willapa, Wahkiakum, and Kathlamet bands includes 2,300 people. Chinook host four-day Lewis and Clark Bicentennial event in Chinook, Washington.
The Chinook built large cedar plank houses. The cedar plankhouse was the typical permanent dwelling of the Chinook and other coastal Northwest people. The size of these sturdy buildings ranged from approximately 14 x 20 feet to 40 x 100 feet.

The ancient Makah lived in villages, inhabiting large longhouses made from western red cedar. These longhouses had cedar -plank walls. The planks could be tilted or removed to provide ventilation or light.
Chinook Jargon, also called Tsinuk Wawa, pidgin, presently extinct, formerly used as a trade language in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. It is thought to have originated among the Northwest Coast Indians, especially the Chinook and the Nuu-chah-nulth ( Nootka ) peoples.
Today, the Shakopee Mdewakanton are believed to be the richest tribe in American history as measured by individual personal wealth: Each adult, according to court records and confirmed by one tribal member, receives a monthly payment of around $84,000, or $1.08 million a year.

It’s estimated that the Shakopee Mdewakanton tribe – the owners of Mystic Lake Casino Hotel and Little Six Casino – bring in more that $1 billion each year in revenue. With fewer than 500 members in the tribe, once dispersed, each member earns approximately $1.08 million annually.
