A Tribe Called Quest was an American hip hop group that was created in St. Albans, Queens, New York, in the year 1985. The group was originally comprised of rapper and primary producer Q-Tip, rapper Phife Dawg, DJ and co-producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and rapper Jarobi White.

A Tribe Called Quest was established in 1985 by Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, all of whom were born and raised in the borough of Queens, New York. The band is widely regarded as one of the most renowned, respected, and cherished groups in the history of hip-hop.
The rapper known as Q-Tip came up with his stage name by combining the nickname he was given in high school, ″Tip,″ with the letter ″Q,″ which represents Queens, the borough in New York City where he was born and raised. A Tribe Called Quest make a reference to the lightning quick speed of former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Lou Brock in the song ″Check the Rhime.″

Phife Dawg was the one who inspired him to start rapping when he was just nine years old. Not long before that, he and Phife Dawg both experienced ″Rapper’s Delight″ by The Sugarhill Gang for the first time. At the age of twelve, he started to DJ and produce pause tape beats, and he credited his father’s large jazz record collection as another source of inspiration.
